A project code is a short, unique reference for a project, such as P0042, much like an invoice number. It helps teams with many similar projects, or several projects for one customer, tell them apart. Once a project has a code, Avaza shows it in square brackets before the project's name, for example [P0042] Website Refresh, on the project page and in project lists such as the one on timesheets.
Switch on project codes
Only Administrators can change this setting.
Go to Settings › Project Management Settings.
Under Are Project Codes enabled?, choose Automatic Codes or Manual Codes. No Project Codes switches them off.
For automatic codes, fill in the settings below and click Save.
Automatic codes
Avaza gives each new project the next code in a sequence. You set:
- Prefix: optional, up to 5 characters, such as P or PROJ.
- Starting Sequence Number: from 1 to 99999. Each new project gets the next number.
- Project Number length: from 1 to 5. Shorter numbers are padded with zeros, so with a length of 4, number 3 becomes 0003.
Preview shows the result, for example P0003. Each project gets one more than the highest number used so far, or the starting number if that's higher. So raising the starting number skips ahead, and lowering it doesn't reuse numbers. Automatic codes can't be edited in Project Settings.
Manual codes
Add Project shows a Project Code field next to Project Name. It's optional, so you can leave it empty. A code can be up to 30 characters and must be unique; otherwise you see "Project Code already exists. Please provide a unique Project Code". You can add or change a project's code later in Project Settings › General.

Good to know
- Codes are given when a project is created. Switching to automatic codes doesn't number existing projects. With manual codes, you can type a code for any project in its settings.
- "Project Code … already exists. Please update your automatic settings so it can generate a unique project code": the next automatic code is already taken, for example by a code typed in by hand. Raise the Starting Sequence Number past it.
- Switching codes off hides the Project Code field, but projects keep the codes they already have.
