Timesheet entries in Avaza have no separate break field. How you handle breaks depends on whether you want to record the break time itself.

Log breaks as time

Use this when you want to see how much time goes on breaks.

  1. Create an internal project for administrative time, such as "Admin", with no customer. See internal projects.

  2. Create a non-billable timesheet category for each type of break, such as Lunch Break or Rest Break. Go to Settings › Timesheet Settings, click Add Category and untick is Billable?. Administrators, Finance Managers and Portfolio Managers can do this. See timesheet categories.

The Add Category popup in Timesheet Settings with Lunch Break as the Name, the Rate Amount and Cost Amount boxes empty, and is Billable?, is Payable?, is Default? and Add to existing Projects all unticked
  3. Add the categories and your team to the project. In the project's settings, use Add Categories on the Categories tab and Add People on the Members tab. Everyone needs Timesheet entry allowed?.

  4. Ask your staff to log each break on the admin project, with the matching break category.

The New timesheet entry popup with Leave as the Project, Lunch as the Category, no task, Start / End from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, the note "Lunch in the city" and a duration of 1:00

Break time logged this way counts in each person's daily and weekly totals. To report on it, or to leave it out, use the Categories filter in the Timesheet Details report, or group the report by Category.

Leave a gap with start and end times

When Enable Start and End times on all timesheets is on in Settings › Timesheet Settings, each entry has one start and one end time. An entry can't contain a break: its duration is always the time from start to end, and if you change the duration, the end time moves.

So split the work around the break into two entries, such as 9:00 to 12:30 and 13:00 to 17:30. The gap between them is the break. Or log the break as its own entry on your admin project, as above, if you want the day to have no gaps.

Day view entries with start and end times, 9:00 am to 9:30 am, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, with gaps between them

If Don't allow Start/End times to overlap is on, a break entry can't overlap the work entries on either side of it. See start and end times and timesheet settings.
